So how many of you checked your calendars to see what day today is?
Today, April 20th 2012, is the date we "cover the night". Kony 2012 was one of the biggest things I've ever seen hit the internet. Every YouTube comment were just people shouting at us, "KONY 2012", and every second post on my news feed on facebook were spreading the word further. And yes this did get annoying after a certain point hahaha
I admit after I realised the video was like 27 minutes long, I clicked away. Don't lie to me. So did you!!
But the internet really was giving it so much attention that I had to find out what the hell 'Kony' was. After reading a few words from the description box all I read was "make Joseph Kony famous" and I thought it was gonna be some retarded scam trying to get some pop singer well known or something bahahaha wtf yes okk I sound retarded.
I watched the video, and like everyone of you out there, I was quite touched by it. It was really hard to imagine that there are people out there who actually go through this. Living in Australia, I really am privileged and it's not fair that this is happening in the world while I just sit here doing nothing about it. And I do think it's great that everyone felt for these people and wanted to help out.
But how
much were you helping,
really. By sharing around this informative video, we were supposedly raising awareness which will magically lead to the capture of Joseph Kony.
At the risk of sounding hipster, ('
oh i heard about that aaaages before you.') even before all these critiques against Kony surfaced, I was already suspicious at this whole idea.
First of all, it reminded me all too much of those pictures/posts people share on facebook, in which there would be a picture of perhaps a diseased child, an animal being abused, etc. with a caption saying 'like if you are against blah and share so everyone knows!'.
Oh my god, how they irritate me.Yes, I am against any kind of abuse, and wish cancer didn't exist, just like everyone else. Liking or sharing that picture, however, will get us nowhere okk. People know about cancer, that there's abuse, whatever it is and I do not need to see such a depressing picture every time I scroll through my news feed. It's not going to raise money, or stop the cause, you just want to be annoying and think you're cool for starting something which keeps spreading.
The video for Kony did seem much more sincere than those posts on facebook, not to mention it seemed much more legit. But there was a resemblance between the video and those posts.
While they told us that sharing the video and raising awareness would contribute to the capture of Kony, it didn't really feel like it would be doing anything at all, really.
Then a few days later, I saw various articles and videos critiquing the video. Statistics on how the money is spent, people from Uganda telling us this wasn't even an issue anymore, and articles explaining the uselessness of this movement, and that this is actually a complicated issue which was over simplified in the video.
And you know what. Even though this was such a huge thing all over the internet, it totally died down, not that soon after. It lasted about a little over a week, and I've heard nobody speak of it since.
So scheduled for today, April 20th, we were meant to 'cover the night' and wear shirts to support the arrest of Joseph Kony. But it would seem the fad has long passed, and nobody is concerned anymore.

Nobody is interested.
Which is why I couldn't help but wonder what is going to become of 'cover the night'. How many people will really participate??
Of course I could just get proven wrong bahahaha
But to be clear, I'm not exactly against Kony 2012. I think it's great that they were trying to get everyone involved, and I do think that people should realise how lucky they are to be living in the conditions that they do, and should help out those who aren't as fortunate.
I guess it just seems that people may not care enough, or maybe too short attention span lolol i dunno.
I just don't feel like 'cover the night' is gonna be the huge success that was expected. Everyone's forgotten and moved on.
Instead, people should just give back, by donating to charities, maybe even do some volunteer work. Or just do something nice for someone.
